CG NEWS: Two minor gets treated for Osteoid Osteoma

RAIPUR: The team of doctors of Radiology department, Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Medical College Hospital, one of the biggest in Chhattisgarh has cured ‘Osteoid Osteoma’ among two minor children, without major surgery.

Interventional Radiologist Dr. Vivek Patre said that one girl aged four was having unbearable pain in her right leg. A doctor from Balodabazar district referred to Raipur where it was detected as a bone related disease called ‘Osteoid Osteoma’.

Dr Patre said that through non-invasive needle-assisted CT guided radiofrequency ablation procedure the treatment was done. The other case is of an eight-year-old boy from Nainpur district of Madhya Pradesh where the osteoid osteoma was located in the thigh of the left leg.

Dr Patre said that osteoid osteoma contains the growing tumor cells, blood vessels and cells. These usually develop in the long bones of the human body such as the thigh bone (femur), tibia (shin). This is a non-cancerous bone tumor and does not spread throughout the body, but it is quite painful.

He said using a bone biopsy needle, with the help of the machine, the tumor is destroyed from within with the help of high energy waves. The process takes a maximum half an hour to one hour. The treatment is done with the help of spinal anesthesia so that the patient does not feel even the slightest pain. After treatment the patient can live a normal life.

Superintendent of Ambedkar Hospital and Head of Radiology Department, Dr. S. B. S. Netam, this is probably the first government institution in the state where the treatment of the disease is done through needle without incision. Minimally invasive procedure is adopted for treatment through radio frequency ablation machines. The disease is being treated through machines imported from Germany.

Do not ignore foot pain in small children

The team of doctors said that if there is constant pain in the feet of small children should never be ignored. Especially leg pain that occurs at night because sometimes it can also be caused by a bone disease called osteoid osteoma that occurs in children. The pain occurs especially at night, due to which many times family members ignore the pain, which can prove fatal in the future.
