CG NEWS: 4-year-old minor gets new life with pacemaker

Raipur, CG: Dr. Smit Srivastava, Head of the Department of Cardiology and the team at the Advanced Cardiac Institute located at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Smriti Hospital, affiliated to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College, gave a new life to a 4-year-old child by installing a pacemaker in his heart.

The doctor said the child had a blockage in his heart since birth due to which his pulse rate came down to 40 to 50 beats per minute. Till now pacemaker has been successfully implanted in the hearts of people ranging from 4 years to 102 years old in ACI. Cases of pacemaker installation in small children are rare. Approximately one in 22,000 live births require a pacemaker. In most cases, a pacemaker is not required.

Giving detailed information, Dr Srivastava says that the child was suffering from a congenital heart block. The blockage was detected by the pediatrician in the hospital, it was found that there was blockage in the heart. The child being minor, special care needed to be taken to insert the pacemaker as the weight of the child was also relatively low.

The father of the child said, “I am thankful to all those doctors who identified my son's illness in time and provided support in getting him treated at ACI. I thank Dr. Smit Srivastava of ACI and his team for saving my son's life in time and giving him a new life. My son got better treatment in the heart government hospital.”
