RAIPUR: As soon as the summer vacations begin, you can see the news papers and banners on roadside and on squares declaring about the exciting summers camps full of fun and activities for the kids. In this colourful and limited world of resources and opportunities, a large section of our society whose children go to government schools are deprived of such opportunities. And they have left with no options to be roaming in the street or visiting relatives and many of them fell to the wrong trap and bad habits or exploring opportunities what ever comes their way. But this time its not going to happen because some of the government schoolteachers have voluntarily decided to make the children’s world colourful with the activities of learning and teaching this holiday. And all these learning and teaching summer camps will be organized during summer holidays. And for these camps, Azim Premji Foundation is supporting these teachers both at idea level and making of Teaching learning materials. At present Azim Premji Foundation is working in the 8 districts of the state which includes Raipur, Jashpur, Sarguja, Raigarh, Janjgir-Champa, Balaudabazar, Bemetara and Dhamtari. The Foundation along with the government schoolteachers and officials are planning to organize the summers camps in the schools where teachers are agreeing to organize it voluntarily. Also, it is to be mentioned that many of the schools have already been organized such camps in their school just after the annual examinations are over. In these centres, children will not only be exposed to language and math activities, but will also be living constitutional values in the process of learning, such as supporting their other peers in their learning, caring about their partner towards their circumstances, being sensitive, everyone getting opportunities to learn with equal opportunity, all children being respected etc. Apart from this, these teachers have not only taken decisions about running the centre but also in collaboration with Azim Premji Foundation, they are also creating teaching learning materials for various activities that help children to acquire basic skills of learning language and mathematics. The main objectives of operating these centres in summer are to work to develop basic linguistic and basic mathematical skills in the child, Teachers will be able to provide learning opportunities according to the needs of the children. Teachers will understand the methods of creating and using teaching aids for activities according to the level of children and in the process, children will get opportunities to learn through creative ways and manipulations by doing on their own. In addition to learning activities in this centre, activities like games, songs, craft work, art, clay work will also be included. And most important thing is that there will be no admission or entry fee in these centres and any child can attend it. We talked to one of the teachers engaged in these preparation, Ms. Vijia Sharma, a teacher at a primary school in Gudihari B says, “After 30th April the children will have their vacations, then I along with Nandini Verma madam of our school, we are going to organize a summer camp for the children. In this, we are working for the language and mathematical development skills of the children so that the children stay connected with their studies even during the holidays and other educational and recreational activities also take place. We are currently building TLM for this.”
