CG NEWS: Role of CPR is important in saving patient’s life in emergency: Expert

RAIPUR: The role of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is important in saving the life of a patient in an emergency. If any patient is found in an unconscious state, then the response is checked by taping his shoulder, said Dr. Pratibha Jain Shah, Head of Department of Anaesthesia and Chief Trainer of Life Support Course on Friday.

She was imparting training on the second day of the 13th workshop of the Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Course, conducted and certified by the American Heart Association, in the Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine Department of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College and Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, Raipur

“If there is no response, check the carotid pulse without delay. If a pulse is not found, activate emergency medical service and do chest compression. Chest compression has to be done 30 times and artificial breath has to be given 2 times,” she said.

A total of 100 to 120 compressions have to be given in a minute. During this, the carotid or central pulse is checked again every two minutes. By doing this the patient can be brought back to consciousness, she added.

The experts spoke on the importance of push hard and push fast. Along with this, information was given about handling the medico-legal case. Critical patients were explained how to take care of them in case of cardiac arrest.

Emergency medicine specialist Dr. Shivam Patel said that due to people trained in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support courses, there is a decrease in the number of people dying of cardiac arrest (accidental heart attack).
