CG NEWS: Pacemaker inserted on right side for first time in ACI

* Third case of conduction system pacing from the right side in the state.

Raipur (CG): The cardiology department of the Advanced Cardiac Institute located at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Medical College Hospital based doctors normalized the abnormal heartbeat of a 75-year-old patient by installing a conduction pacing system on the right side of his heart.

Dr. Smit Srivastava, Head of the Department of Cardiology at ACI, stated that a new wire of the conduction pacing system was fitted in the internal fibers of the heart (Bundle of His and Purkinje fibers) provided by nature and electrical waves were transmitted from the upper chamber to the lower chamber of the heart. It succeeded in normalizing the heart beat of a high risk patient by facilitating the flow of blood.

He said the 75-year-old male patient, resident of Raipur, was fitted with a pacemaker a year ago in a private hospital. After three months, pus started coming out from the patient's chest. He was again admitted to a private hospital four times, yet the patient continued to suffer from repeated infections.

Finally the patient approached the Advanced Cardiac Institute with all the complications. Dr Srivastava said after primary investigation it was found, first, implantation of a three-wire pacemaker and second, implantation of a two-wire advanced technology pacemaker (conduction pacing system).

Considering the challenges, it was decided to implant the patient with a two-wire pacemaker, with conduction system pacing technology, on the right side.

Dr. Smit also applied an anti-bacterial envelope along with the pacemaker for the betterment of the patient. Along with this, the old pacemaker and wire inserted from the left side have also been removed.

Now the heart will beat naturally and properly like before, he added.
