Rekindling flame of devotion by getting Ram's name tattooed

* Ramnami followers group participates in Rajim Kumbh

Rajim, Chhattisgarh, India: There is a unique tradition of Ram Bhakti among the famous people who awaken the flame of devotion to Ram by tattooing Ram's name all over their body. They wear a peacock feather crown on their head and wear clothes with Ram's name written on them. This group known as the ‘Ramnami’ community participated in the Rajim Kumbh Mela.

About 18 Ramnami have arrived from Sarangarh, Bilaigarh, Janjgir-Champa and Balodabazar districts, which include three women and men. There is a crown with peacock feathers on his head, under which Ram-Ram is written. Kaushal Bhartiya said the followers of this sect get Ram-Ram tattooed all over their body, but now Ram-Ram is written only on the forehead, which is called ‘Shiromani’. He said that the institution was registered in 1975. At that time the number of people following the Ramnami sect was more than 27,000, now it is gradually decreasing.

The community believes that Ram resides in every pore of the people who follow the Ramnami sect. That is why followers have Ram's name tattooed all over their bodies. He says that Ram resides in every human being. That's why we address him as Ram-Ram and remember Lord Shri Ram. Only people above 40 years of age are accepted among the followers of this sect. His entire life is dedicated to Ram. They consider the name of Ram as the only basis of their life. They express their devotion towards him by getting the name of Ram tattooed all over their body. They chant the name of Ram all the time. Their five main symbols are the name of Ram on the body, playing Ghungru, wearing a crown made of peacock feathers, wearing white clothes and chanting bhajans and kirtans.
