CG NEWS: Doctors removes 100% blockage in kidney vein

RAIPUR,CG: In the Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI) located at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, Raipur Chhattisgarh, a 66-year-old patient with 100 percent blockage in the left artery supplying blood to the kidney and 90 percent blockage in the main vein of the heart was successfully treated with the excimer laser method.

The doctors claimed that as per the available medical literature, it is the first case of treatment of complete block of renal vein by laser angioplasty in the world.

Dr. Smit Srivastava, Head of Cardiology Department of ACI, led the team and said the patient was saved from renal failure and heart failure by simultaneously treating the kidney artery i.e. renal artery and coronary artery. Both these interventional procedures are called left renal artery chronic total occlusion and in-stent restenosis of coronary arteries respectively.

He said for the first time, there was 100 percent renal occlusion due to which blood pressure was not able to be controlled. Kidneys were failing.

He said, there was blockage in both the veins supplying blood to the patient's kidneys. One had 100 percent blockage and the other had 70-80 percent blockage. The main blockage was where the left renal artery begins. The blood flow had completely stopped. The patient had a blockage in the main vein of the heart for which he had to undergo a stent in a private hospital in 2023, which had been closed. The stunt was completely blocked. Due to all these problems the patient was suffering from heart failure, hypertension, and difficulty in breathing and B. P. was not under control.

The treatment was done using the excimer laser, then the path was widened with a balloon, by placing a stent in it. It helped to reduce the BP.

Due to previous angioplasty, more than 90 percent blockage was found inside the stent inserted in the left anterior descending artery, the main vein on the left side of the heart. For it, a path was first created by opening the blockage with the help of a laser. The passage was then expanded using a balloon. Since the blockage was outside the stunt as well as the stunt, it was decided to clear the blockage by inserting a new stunt. Both blockages were treated by inserting an additional stent. The patient is now fine and is ready to go home after being discharged.
