CG NEWS: Role of committees important: Speaker

RAIPUR,CG: The role of committees is important in the parliamentary governance system. Many functions of Parliament and Legislature are done through committees in the form of mini Houses, said Chhattisgarh State Legislative Assembly Speaker Dr Raman Singh.

He was addressing the joint meeting of the financial committees of Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly constituted for the year 2024-25, Public Accounts Committee, Estimates Committee, Committee on Government Undertakings and Local Body and Panchayati Raj Accounts Committee was held today in Committee Room No. 1 located in the Legislative Assembly premises.

Singh said this year, two former Legislative Assembly Speakers are in the financial committees as the Chairman. All will benefit from the experiences and parliamentary knowledge of these senior members. The role of committees is important in the parliamentary governance system. Many functions of Parliament and Legislature are done through committees in the form of mini houses.

There are 21 committees in the Legislative Assembly, among which the Public Accounts Committee and Estimates Committee, Committee on Government Undertakings and Local Bodies and Panchayati Raj Accounts Committee are the financial committees of the House.  The work related to complete review, control of financial functioning and suggestions and recommendations as necessary is done by these committees, he said.

Singh adds the Public Accounts Committee is an important financial committee of the Legislative Assembly. The important function of this committee is to maintain financial control over the government. The main function of the Public Accounts Committee is to see whether the budget passed by the Legislative Assembly is spent properly on those schemes and works or not. The committee also sees that there is no wasteful expenditure or financial irregularities.

Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Dr. Charandas Mahant said the Financial committees play an important role in the parliamentary committee. Committees are a miniature form of the Assembly and through their work, these committees will ensure the accountability of the executive towards the legislature, the basic element of parliamentary democracy.

Chairman of the Estimate Committee, Ajay Chandrakar said that how the working system of the departments can be improved by examining the working methods of the departments. The committee will focus its attention on it.

Chairman of the Committee on Public Undertakings, Amar Aggarwal said the committee mainly examines the accounts and reports of the Government Undertakings, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India and the autonomy and efficiency of the Government Undertakings.

Chairman of the Local Bodies and Panchayati Raj Accounts Committee, Dharamlal Kaushik said that the work related to the complete review, control and as necessary suggestions and recommendations of the financial functioning of the local bodies and Panchayats of the state is done.
