RAIPUR,CG,INDIA: Chhattisgarh’s Forest and Climate Change Department, in partnership with Vibgyor N.E. Foundation, Prajna Pravah, NIT Raipur, and Amity University, is organizing the 1st Chhattisgarh Green Summit from October 3-5, 2024, at the Deendayal Auditorium in Raipur. The event, a precursor to the LokManthan Edition, aims to foster discussions on environmental sustainability and the role of Lok traditions in development.
LokManthan, launched in 2016, gathers artists, thinkers, intellectuals, and social activists to reshape cultural narratives and embrace India’s civilizational role.
The summit will begin with an opening session on October 3, followed by technical discussions on the connection between forests and communities, Indian forestry, and ecosystem services. Experts will provide insights into ecological restoration and the benefits of forests, promoting a sustainable model that balances ecology and community welfare.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai will inaugurate the summit, with Forest and Climate Change Minister Kedar Kashyap as the guest of honor. Renowned environmentalists and social activists, including Jadav Payeng (Forest Man of India), Chami Murmu from Jharkhand, Popatrao Pawar (Sarpanch of Hirwe Bazar, Maharashtra), and Hemchandra Majhi, will lead discussions on sustainability through Lok traditions.
Bitapi Basumatary Luhoe, Secretary of Vibgyor N.E. Foundation, emphasized the summit’s focus on bridging development and environmental sustainability. “This initiative highlights our commitment to preserving Chhattisgarh’s natural and cultural heritage through Lok traditions,” Luhoe said.
V. Srinivasa Rao, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force, underscored the event’s importance in rethinking forestry and conservation. “Engaging diverse stakeholders, this summit seeks to create a sustainable model that ensures ecological balance and supports community welfare,” Rao said.
Day two will focus on policy interventions for sustainable use of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and the impact of climate change on forests and communities. Discussions will also address technological advancements in forest management, promoting responsible ecotourism, and empowering forest-dependent communities through sustainable practices.
Prof. N.V. Ramana Rao, Director of NIT Raipur, expressed pride in supporting the summit, noting the institute’s commitment to environmental education. “This event aligns with our mission to foster environmental awareness and sustainable development,” he said.
The final day will tackle urban environmental challenges, focusing on wetland restoration and greening urban areas. Experts will explore the role of urban forestry in combating climate change and discuss the future of sustainable cities. The summit will conclude with an action plan, outlining recommendations for Chhattisgarh’s sustainable development.
Prof. Piyush Kant Pandey, Vice Chancellor of Amity University, Raipur, highlighted the importance of community participation in conservation. “This summit is vital for integrating traditional knowledge and community voices into sustainability efforts, ensuring local communities play an active role in environmental preservation,” Pandey said.
The three-day event will feature exhibitions and workshops on traditional foods, tribal crafts, Janjati music instruments, medicinal plants, and local art forms. Live performances of Chhattisgarh’s Janjati Instrumental Music, tribal storytelling, and demonstrations of traditional medicine practices will showcase the state’s rich cultural heritage.
