36 Kamar families pledge to conserve water

DHAMATRI,CG,BHARAT: In a significant step towards water conservation, 36 Kamar tribal families from Piprahi Bharri in Dhamtari district have united to construct dikes, ponds, and water storage systems on their land. The initiative, part of the district-wide Jal Jagar Mahotsav led by the Dhamtari district administration, aims to combat the declining water levels and promote sustainable water use.

Under the campaign “Nari Shakti Se Jal Shakti,” the Kamar families, belonging to the special tribal group in the Vananchal urban development block, are working to store rainwater and conserve water resources. Inspired by the ongoing Jal Jagar Mahotsav, organized at the initiative of Collector Namrata Gandhi, these families have taken an oath to protect their forests and land by ensuring sustainable water practices.

Water Conservation Efforts

The Kamar families are actively engaged in constructing ponds, dikes, and other water retention structures. Three families have already built ponds for fish farming, while dikes are being constructed in nearby drains to trap rainwater and recharge groundwater. These efforts aim to maintain moisture levels in the soil, recharge nearby borewells, and secure water for both domestic and agricultural use. The dike structures, made from polythene-like materials, are designed to hold water in drain areas, allowing the surrounding land to remain fertile and supporting the water needs of wildlife in the forests.

Forest Preservation and Water Sustainability

The Kamar families are committed to keeping the forests green and ensuring that wild animals have access to water, particularly during dry seasons. With 113 members among the 36 families in Piprahi Bharri, this community-driven approach is seen as a model for sustainable living, balancing human needs with environmental stewardship.

Jal Jagar Mahotsav Celebrations

The Jal Jagar Mahotsav, a two-day event, will be held at the Ravi Shankar Reservoir Gangrel Dam on October 5th and 6th. The festival aims to raise awareness about water conservation, bringing together communities from across the region to celebrate and promote sustainable water practices. Through initiatives, Dhamtari district is setting an example in addressing water scarcity and fostering collective responsibility for the environment.
