RAIPUR,CG,BHARAT: Chhattisgarh plans to promote fishery tourism in areas rich in water resources and dams to enhance the income of fish farmers and create sustainable employment opportunities.
Addressing a seminar on World Fisheries Day at Krishi Mandapam, Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, the state’s Farmers Welfare Minister Ramvichar Netam emphasized the potential of fishery tourism to transform the livelihoods of fish farmers by integrating them into clusters and committees.
The minister highlighted the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the establishment of a separate Ministry of Fisheries as significant steps to uplift small-scale fish farmers and improve their living standards.
Many farmers in the state rely on fishing in village ponds for their livelihood. To support them, the government provides a 60% subsidy under fisheries schemes, encouraging farmers to utilize these benefits. The minister also urged efforts to promote fisheries in regions like Dhamtari, Durg, and Raipur, known for their abundant water resources.
The event featured addresses by Fisheries Minister and other dignitaries, including the Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, Hemlata Nishad, and representatives from the Cooperative Department. A large gathering of fish farmers participated in the seminar.
