RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing the first position in India for the largest increase in combined forest and tree cover, as per the Indian Forest Survey Report (ISFR) 2023. The total forest cover of the state now spans an impressive 55,812 square kilometres.
Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai attributed the achievement to the relentless conservation efforts and initiatives undertaken by the Forest and Climate Change Department, as well as the collective environmental responsibility shown by the people of Chhattisgarh.
“This accomplishment is a testament to the state’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the active participation of local communities in conservation programs,” said the Chief Minister.
According to the ISFR 2023, the country witnessed an overall increase of 1,445 square kilometers in forest and tree cover, with 156 square kilometres added to forest cover and 1,289 square kilometres to tree cover. Chhattisgarh leads this progress with an increase of 684 square kilometres, followed by Uttar Pradesh and Odisha with 559 square kilometres each, and Rajasthan with 394 square kilometres.
The achievement underscores Chhattisgarh's dedication to preserving its rich biodiversity while setting an example for other states in sustainable environmental management.
