RAIPUR: In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors from the Heart, Chest, and Vascular Surgery and Cancer Surgery departments at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Medical College Hospital, Raipur in Chhattisgarh have successfully removed a massive 5-kilogram tumor, saving the life of a 52-year-old woman. The tumor, located near the heart and lungs, posed a significant threat to the patient’s vital organs.
The team, led by Dr. Krishnakant Sahu from the Heart, Chest, and Vascular Surgery Department and Dr. Ashutosh Gupta from the Cancer Surgery Department, performed the intricate procedure, which required exceptional precision to avoid damaging the patient’s heart and lungs. Following the surgery, the patient made a full recovery and has since been discharged.
Dr. Santosh Sonkar, Medical Superintendent of Ambedkar Hospital, praised the team’s efforts, stating, "The Heart, Chest, and Vascular Surgery Department and Cancer Surgery Department of Ambedkar Hospital have once again demonstrated their excellence in handling complex cases. Thanks to the dedicated surgeons and collaborative efforts of multiple departments, even the most challenging operations are being performed successfully. We look forward to further advancements, including open-heart and coronary bypass surgeries."
The 52-year-old patient, the mother of a physiotherapy intern, arrived at the hospital with severe breathing difficulties. Diagnostic tests, including a CT scan, revealed a massive tumor pressing against her heart and lungs, causing a significant displacement of the heart and compression of the windpipe. The critical condition necessitated the use of a high-pressure BiPAP ventilator to aid breathing.
The patient’s family was informed about the risks involved, including the possibility of sudden death or the need to abort the operation if the tumor was too entangled with vital organs. Having been turned away by other medical institutions, the family placed their trust in Ambedkar Hospital’s surgical team.
The team meticulously planned the operation, with a heart-lung machine on standby to provide support in case of complications. The tumor, identified as a malignant sarcoma during a biopsy, was successfully removed without causing damage to the surrounding organs.
The patient has since been referred to the Cancer Department for follow-up chemotherapy.
The surgery was made possible by a dedicated team, including Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Dr. Kishan Soni, anesthetists Dr. Pratibha Jain and Dr. Jaya Lalwani, and nursing staff Rajendra, Narendra, Bhupendra, and Harish.
