Pandi Ram Mandavi from Bastar selected for Padma Shri Award

RAIPUR,INDIA: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai has congratulated tribal artist Pandi Ram Mandavi of Narayanpur district on being selected for the prestigious Padma Shri award. The award recognizes his exceptional contribution to traditional musical instrument making and wood craftsmanship.

At 68 years old, Mandavi belongs to the Gond Muria tribe and has dedicated over five decades to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Bastar. He is particularly renowned for crafting the bamboo flute known as ‘Sulur’, a traditional musical instrument from Bastar. In addition to his work with musical instruments, he has gained international recognition for his embossed paintings, sculptures, and wooden panel artifacts.

Mandavi learned his craft at the age of 12 from his ancestors and has since elevated the art and culture of Chhattisgarh on the global stage. He has exhibited his work in over eight countries and has trained more than a thousand artisans through his workshops, ensuring the continuity of this traditional art form for future generations.
