CG News: Panel discusses to facilitate differently able voters

RAIPUR: Chief Electoral Officer, Chhattisgarh Reena Babasaheb Kangale on Thursday asked officials to chalk out an action plan for the easy voting of voters with disabilities (PwDs) in the upcoming assembly elections-2023 in the state. She was chairing the Chhattisgarh State level Steering Committee on Accessible Elections at CEO office, Raipur. She briefed the officials of the Social Welfare Department and the Directorate of Public Education on recommendations forwarded by the National Advisory Committee on Accessible Elections under Election Commission of India. Kangale suggested holding a special camp in collaboration with the Health and Family Welfare Department to provide medical certificates of disability to the identified disabled voters. She called for an organizing training programme at the district level to mark polling center-wise differently-abled voters. Training be imparted also to members of the polling party and the security personnel. PwDs electors’ names should be entered in the server so as to make it an error-free electoral roll. The camp should also be held for adding names of third-gender and those having attained age of 18 years in the voters list, she added. She said cooperation of non-governmental and civil-social organizations (NGOs/CSOs) and volunteers working for the welfare of the third gender community can be taken. For visually impaired voters, voice messages providing necessary information related to voting should be prepared. It needs to be sent to them through their mobile numbers. The numbers should be shared with the CEO office. Similarly, films for deaf and dumb are prepared, she added. Kangale asked officials of the Directorate of Public Education to conduct a third party audit to mark the actual availability of essential infrastructure facilities at the polling stations. The websites of all the District Election Officers have to be made PwDs friendly.
