Prof. Sivakumar elected as President of Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA).

New Delhi: Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar, Senior Professor, Indian Law Institute, New Delhi/ Former Member, Law Commission of India has been elected as the new President of the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA). Prof. Sivakumar is only the second Indian to hold this prestigious position, following in the footsteps of the late Prof. N. R. Madhava Menon. The election took place as part of the CLEA Golden Jubilee Conference held from March 2 to 4, 2023 in Delhi NCR and the 23rd Commonwealth Law Conference held from March5 to 9, 2023 at Goa, India. Prof. Sivakumar is a native of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. His wife, Prof. (Dr.) Seeja K. R. is a Professor at Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women. His son, Nikhil S. Sivakumar, is a doctoral candidate at Radboud University, Nijmegen, Netherlands, and his daughter, Nandita S. Sivakumar, is pursuing MBBS at CMC Ludhiana. Prof. Sivakumar's family is a testament to the value they place on education and academic excellence. Prof. Sivakumar is a renowned legal scholar and academician with over two decades of experience in teaching and research and he has served in several leadership roles in the legal community.Prof. Sivakumar has been India's Country Representative for CLEA since 1997 and has been a member of the CLEA Executive Committee since 2003. In 2019, he was elected as Vice President of CLEA. At the national and international levels, Prof. Sivakumar has driven change and growth, having taken on the responsibility of overseeing two international projects: as the Honorary Chairman of the Commonwealth Law Reform Commission (CLRC) and the Commonwealth Comparative Constitutional and Public Law Project (3C&PL). One of his most notable achievements is the Commonwealth Institute for Justice Education and Research (CIJER), an exclusive research wing of CLEA, which was conceptualized and established under his visionary leadership. CIJER's research has been both impactful and far-reaching on crucial issues affecting the entire South Asian region. He has been conferred Honoris Causa (LL.D) for his immense contribution in the field of Law and Mass Communication. As an accomplished scholar and prolific writer, Prof. Sivakumar has authored numerous books and research papers on a wide range of legal issues, including human rights, constitutional law, and legal education. His scholarly contributions have been widely acknowledged and appreciated by legal practitioners, academicians, and researchers worldwide. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of legal education, Prof. Sivakumar was awarded the prestigious CLEA Golden Jubilee Global Legal Education Award-2023. Commenting on his election, Prof. Sivakumar said, "I am deeply honoured and humbled by the trust that the CLEA has placed in me, I am committed to working with the organization's members and partners to promote and enhance legal education and research in Commonwealth countries, and to advance the rule of law and access to justice for all”.
