Youth undergo MIC open heart surgery in Government Hospital

Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India: A 20-year-old patient was successfully operated on through Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) in the Heart, Chest and Vascular Surgery Department of the Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI) located at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, Raipur, one of the biggest hospital in government sector.

The Department Head Dr. Krishnakant Sahu said that ACI is the first government institute of the Chhattisgarh, where open heart surgery facility is available. The surgical procedure is carried out by making a small incision on the patient's chest, due to which the patient recovers very quickly and the scar is also minor.

Dr Sahu said the 20-year-old patient living in Dhamdha had congenital heart disease. The patient had reported of short of breath and swelling in his hands and legs.

He was admitted to the medicine department. After examination it was found that there was a 4 X 3 cm hole in the heart , termed as atrial septal defect (ASD). The operation for it should have been done in childhood itself. With age, the heart's function (pumping) decreases and after some time, heart failure occurs. The patient underwent antifailure treatment for about 10 days in the medicine department. He was then shifted to ACI for operation, said Dr Sahu.

Dr. Sahu further said using minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) and the hole in his heart was closed. The patient returned to his normal life on the next day. He began to work, take food and water.

The patient is ready for discharge from the hospital after five days, said Dr Sahu.
