CG: Health Minister emphasizes vigilance, preparedness for HMPV virus

RAIPUR,INDIA: Chhattisgarh’s Health Minister, Shyam Bihari Jaiswal on Tuesday addressed concerns regarding the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) virus, assuring the public that there is no need to panic.

He emphasized that the health department is fully prepared and actively monitoring the situation, conducting studies on the virus’s symptoms and effects.

In a meeting held with senior officials of the Health Department at Mantralaya Nava Raipur, Jaiswal outlined the state’s preparedness in dealing with any potential outbreak of the HMPV virus. He confirmed that the health team is keeping a close watch on the virus, which has been reported in some parts of the country.

Shri Jaiswal noted, “There is no need to panic, as the HMPV virus has been reported in the past as well. However, it is crucial to take necessary precautions to protect ourselves and others.” He emphasized that the health department had made extensive preparations since the COVID-19 pandemic and is committed to tackling any emergencies that may arise.

The Health Minister urged the public to maintain cleanliness and follow safety guidelines to avoid the spread of the virus. According to health experts, preventive measures include, avoid crowded places and maintain distance from individuals showing symptoms of cold, cough, and fever.

Seek immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms such as cold, cough, fever, or difficulty breathing. Cover mouth and nose with a handkerchief while coughing or sneezing. Clean hands regularly with soap or sanitizer. Stay home if you are sick, hydrate frequently, and consume nutritious food to support your immune system.

Experts advise against reusing tissues after coughing or sneezing, touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, or mouth, after touching potentially contaminated surfaces. Spitting in public places, which can spread germs. Self-medicating without consulting a doctor.

HMPV, a common respiratory virus typically seen during the winter season, spreads through droplets from coughing, sneezing, shaking hands, or close contact with an infected person. It can also spread by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes.

Common symptoms include cold, cough, fever, and breathing difficulties. In severe cases, the virus can lead to pneumonia or bronchitis.
