Four Naxals of Darbha Division surrenders

JAGDALPUR,CG,BHARAT: Four Naxalites from Darbha Division, who had carried out the Jheeram Valley attack in 2013, one of these Maoists, Pandu, had a bounty of Rs 1 lakh on him have surrendered on Wednesday.

All the Maoists who surrendered are members of Kanger National Park Area Committee of Darbha Division. A woman Maoist is also included among the Naxalites who surrendered. Bastar Superintendent of Police Salabh Sinha has announced to give them benefits and incentives under the surrender scheme.

Darbha division was the main centre of Naxalite activities from 2005 to 2015, but it has declined since 2016. Due to the killing and surrender of senior Naxalite leaders, most of the Naxalites in the area have surrendered, which has led to a decline in Naxalite activities.

On May 25, 2013, a tragic and brutal Maoist ambush took place in the Jheeram Valley of Darbha, Bastar district, Chhattisgarh. Heavily armed Maoists attacked a convoy of senior Congress leaders, killing 29 people, including prominent political figures like then state Congress chief Nand Kumar Patel, former leader of opposition Mahendra Karma, and former Union minister Vidyacharan Shukla.

The attack occurred while political campaigning for the upcoming state assembly elections was underway. Congress leaders were returning from a 'Parivartan Rally' in Bastar district when the convoy was ambushed in one of the deadliest Maoist attacks in India's history.

The incident shook the nation, drawing attention to the ongoing conflict in Maoist-affected areas and the vulnerability of political leaders in these regions.
