Need to conduct research in Law: CJI

NEW DELHI: The Chief Justice U. U. Lalit underlined the need of conducting research in law and the need to have perspective on judgments.

He was addressing the Indian Law Institute CLEA-MILAT Research Mentoring Programme (RMP) 2022 inaugural event on Monday at the Plenary Hall, Indian Law Institute, New Delhi.

Justice Lalit citing the book by Richard Posner on ‘Economic analysis of law’ said that administration of justice needs to transcend to a sphere where the needs of the most deprived/disadvantaged are met.

He further emphasized on the need of going beyond the intent of law to enhance the dimensions of legal research and education so that dharma is protected.

The RMP will be conducted in three Phases, span over a course of 8-10 weeks, which will include detailed academic inputs and assistance extended by expert resource persons. The First Phase – Preparatory Training (October 31‐ November 06- Physical mode), Second Phase – Beginning of Research (Distance mode) and Third Phase – Project Writing & Testing the Data (Distance mode).

Justice Lalit released and handed over to R. Venkataramani, Attorney General for India the book titled “Legal Measures for Tackling Pandemic in Asia: Lessons Learned and the Way Forward” edited by Prof (Dr.) S Sivakumar, Senior Professor Indian Law Institute/ Former Member, Law Commission of India, and Ethan Waddell.

Another book “Legal Research and Writing: New Perspectives” was also released. It was edited by Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha, Director, ILI and Dr. Deepa Kharb, Assistant Professor, ILI, is a joint publication of Indian Law Institute with LexisNexis.

The Research Mentoring Programme (RMP) has been designed with the aim of equipping the young educators and researchers with skills that will enable them to contribute towards enhancing legal education and research.

It aims to foster in them, an enhanced acumen for academic enquiry in the field of law and enable them to create institutional infrastructure best suited for developing research-intensive curriculum in legal pedagogy. Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar, Senior Professor, Indian Law Institute, New Delhi also the lead mentor had conceived the idea of Research Mentoring Programme.
