Alternative ID cards can be used to cast votes

RAIPUR: Chief Electoral Officer office, Chhattisgarh on Saturday said that along with the Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC), Election Commission of India has approved 12 other alternative ID cards.

The permission has been granted for the upcoming Bhanupratappur assembly by election on December 5, an official communication said.

The order states that Aadhaar card, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) job card, passbook with photo issued by banks or post offices, health insurance smart card issued under the scheme of Ministry of Labor, driving license, PAN card and smart card issued by Registrar General of India (RGI) under National Population Register (NPR) as alternative identity cards.

The other documents include Indian passport, pension document with photo, service identity card with photo issued by Central, State Government and Public Undertaking, ID card issued by Public Limited Companies to their employees, Government identity card issued to MPs, MLAs, Members of Legislative Council, Unique Disability ID (UDID) card issued by Indian government's Ministry of social justice and Empowerment.

Only the original passport (and no other identity document) will be accepted as proof of identity of overseas voters registered in the electoral roll.
