Chhattisgarh to reintroduce tigers

RAIPUR: In a major decision taken on Monday, Chhattisgarh will reintroduce tigers in Achanakmar Tiger Reserve and Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary due to existing favourable conditions. The tigers will be brought from Madhya Pradesh as per the proposal approved in Chhattisgarh State Wildlife Board chaired by Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel at his official residence here. Based on the proposal of Global Tiger Forum (GTF), the Board approved the proposal to increase the number of tigers in the state by bringing tigers from Madhya Pradesh. It would be released in Achanakmar Tiger Reserve and Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary, where favourable habitat exists. Officials said that till the year 2010, tigers were found in Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary. A Habitat Suitability Report, for Tiger Reintroduction and Tiger Recovery Plan, will be prepared after approval from the National Tiger Conservation Authority, New Delhi. They added that various herbivorous wild animals mainly 49 chital in Kanger Ghati National Park, 39 blackbuck in Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary, 113 chital in Guru Ghasidas National Park, 20 chital in Achanakmar Tiger Reserve, and 14 chital in Tamor Pingla Sanctuary have been released. Permission was granted to the proposed Raipur-Vishakhapatnam Economic Corridor under Bharat Mala Project where 3.5 km of the highway will pass through seven forest areas of the state. The other decisions twere, for the protection and conservation of wild animals promoting livelihood-oriented activities in villages within 10 km radius of forests, strengthening communication network in forest areas (laying optical cable and installation of mobile towers) and conducting awareness campaigns to stop elephant-human conflict (developing pastures and water availability). To increase the number of wild water buffaloes, the state animal, permission was granted to do artificial insemination in wild buffaloes. The assistance of technical institutes will be taken.
