RAIPUR: A 72-year-old man on Wednesday was successfully implanted with a new valve in the heart using a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI Process) procedure at Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI), Raipur in Chhattisgarh. ACI is part of the Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Medical College Hospital, Raipur, the biggest in the state. Head of Cardiology Department, ACI, Dr Smit Srivastava said it is for the first time in history of Medical College, a valve inside a pre-implanted surgical valve has been fixed. It was a high-risk operation on an elderly patient with hypertension and rheumatic heart disease. But it was successful. The Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI Process) procedure is used on patients for whom open-heart surgery is not possible or for whom open-heart surgery is risky. The patient is not given anesthesia and does not remain in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for long, he said. He said the patient had undergone open heart surgery in 2009. In February 2022, he was having chest pain and dizziness. The heart function was only 35 percent.
