CG NEWS: ACI's Cath Lab got protective shield 'Eggnest'

Raipur (C.G.): Radiation protection system has been installed to provide protection to the doctors and the entire team working in the Cath Lab of the Advanced Cardiac Institute located at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, Raipur on Wednesday.

The protective shield called Eggnest provides protection to the medical team working in the cath lab from the harmful radiations emanating from the X-ray machine.

Head of the Department of Cardiology, Dr. Smit Srivastava said that the entire medical team working in Agnest, Cathlab and even the patient lying on the procedure table is provided protection from harmful X-ray radiations. The protective shield is attached on all sides to the table where the cardiology procedure is performed. It is made of carbon micro fiber base and radiation absorbing metallic alloy (bismuth and antimony metal) which absorbs the harmful radiations emanating from the X-ray machine.

“If we are not protected from these radiations, there is a possibility of cancer, cataract and other diseases in future,” he added.

He said the entire procedure in Cath Lab is done with the help of an X-ray machine (X-ray guided procedure). Cardiac interventional procedures take place daily in the cath lab. The entire team stays here for a long time. In such a situation, the entire team is exposed to radiation. It has been designed in such a way as per the speed and direction of the X-ray machine that it can easily move around according to the direction of the patient. It provides 91 percent protection from radiation. It has been given by HDFC under CSR head.
