RAIPUR,CG: Hirabai Jhareka Baghel of Chhattisgarh has been selected for the National Handicraft Award for 2023 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the field of handicrafts. The prestigious award is given by the Office of the Development Commissioner, Handicrafts and Textiles Ministry, Government of India.
Hirabai Baghel is an artisan in the Dhokra bell metal craft. According to the official notification, five Shilp Guru and 18 National Handicraft Awards have been announced for 2023. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai extended his heartfelt congratulations to Hirabai Jhareka Baghel for bringing pride to Chhattisgarh.
She hails from Vananchal Gram Panchayat Baigindih in the Sarangarh-Bilaigarh district, and has previously earned recognition for her craftsmanship. She was awarded by the Government of Chhattisgarh in 2011-12 for her excellence in bell metal craft. Her husband, Minketan Baghel, was also honoured by the Government of Chhattisgarh in 2006-07.
Upon being selected for the national award, Hirabai Jhareka Baghel expressed her gratitude, stating, “My father, Bhulau Jhareka, and my husband are my sources of inspiration. They taught me the art of Dhokra bell metal and continuously encouraged me to pursue and excel in this craft”.
