CM urges public to stay safe during thunderstorms

RAIPUR,CG: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai on Monday has issued an appeal to the public to take necessary precautions during thunderstorms and the rainy season to prevent lightning-related accidents. Emphasizing that the safety of the state's citizens is the top priority, the Chief Minister urged people to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines to avoid potential dangers. His statement comes in the wake of recent tragic incidents caused by lightning strikes across the state.

He emphasized that instructions have been given at the district level to demonstrate safety protocols in local languages to ensure that people understand the dangers and take proper precautions. Municipal bodies, panchayats, and non-governmental organizations have been tasked with organizing special awareness programs on lightning protection.

Sai urged citizens to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid exposure to trees, electric poles, and metal objects, such as umbrellas and wires, which could attract lightning. He highlighted the importance of avoiding contact with metal during rain, as it poses an increased risk of electric shocks.

Additionally, the Chief Minister advised people to steer clear of reservoirs, ponds, rivers, and swimming pools, as water increases the sensitivity to electricity and could spread the current easily. He also recommended turning off electronic devices, including phones, computers, and televisions, and keeping the internet off during storms to minimize the risk of electrical hazards.

In case of being caught outdoors during a lightning strike, Sai suggested that individuals squat with both heels together and cover their ears to reduce exposure. These measures, he noted, are crucial for ensuring the safety of all citizens during stormy weather.

The Chief Minister reiterated the importance of following these preventive steps to protect lives and avoid further tragic incidents during the rainy season.

Seven villagers had died and 3 people were injured due to lightning in Mohtara village of Balodabazar district. Immediate assistance was given to the families of the deceased. The injured have been taken to the hospital by the district administration for prompt treatment.
