MAHASAMUND,INDIA: The first phase of polling for the tri-tier Panchayat general elections in Mahasamund district concluded peacefully on Monday today in the Basna and Saraipali development blocks. Voters turned out at polling stations from 7 AM to 3 PM, actively participating in the democratic process registering 60.12 percent.
In Basna, which covers 102 gram panchayats under the district panchayat, a total of 86,000 out of 1,41,088 registered voters cast their votes, achieving a voter turnout of 61.02 percent. It included 59.13 percent male voters and 62.85 percent female voters. Similarly, in Saraipali, which has 107 gram panchayats, 83,883 out of 1,41,618 registered voters participated, recording a voter turnout of 59.23 percent. Among them, 52.94 percent were male voters, while female voter turnout was significantly higher at 65.44 percent. The overall average voter turnout across both blocks stood at 60.12 percent.
In Basna’s Janpad Panchayat, there are 24 Janpad Panchayat members, 102 sarpanches, and 1,289 panchs, with 1,001 panchs elected unopposed. Additionally, nine sarpanch posts and district member positions were also filled unopposed. The elections saw 642 candidates contesting for panch seats, 307 for sarpanch, and 101 for district member positions.
Similarly, in Saraipali’s Janpad Panchayat, there are 25 Janpad Panchayat members, 107 sarpanches, and 1,391 panchs, of which 1,058 panchs were elected unopposed. Additionally, 13 sarpanch posts and district member positions were filled without contest. A total of 730 candidates vied for panch positions, 337 for sarpanch, and 92 for district member seats.
