RAIPUR,INDIA: In light of the Holi festival on Friday, the timing of prayers in Chhattisgarh mosques has been adjusted. Normally held between 1:00 and 2:00 PM, the Jumma Namaz will now take place between 2:00 and 3:00 PM. The Chhattisgarh Waqf Board has sent a letter to all mosques informing them of this change.
Dr. S.A. Farooqui, CEO of the Waqf Board, requested mosque committees to consider the overlap of Holi, the month of Ramadan, and Jumma prayers on March 14. He emphasized that adjusting the prayer time would help maintain peace, harmony, and mutual respect in the community.
Dr. Salim Raj, Chairman of the Waqf Board, explained that the Johar prayer is typically held at noon, around the same time people start celebrating Holi. To avoid any potential misunderstandings, the prayer timing has been shifted.
Former Waqf Board Chairman and Congress leader Salam Rizvi urged both Hindu and Muslim communities to ensure a peaceful celebration. He requested that if worshippers get colored while heading to the mosque, they should not take offense, as Holi is a festival of brotherhood. He also suggested that Hindus could apply color to Muslim worshippers after they return from the mosque, respecting both traditions. Many mosque committees have agreed to hold prayers after 2:00 PM.
Raipur SSP Lal Umend Singh assured that police are on high alert to prevent any conflicts during Holi. Security measures include monitoring 80 locations across Raipur, continuous patrolling in sensitive areas, and strict action against any disturbances. Police will be on duty for 48 hours, and CCTV cameras will be actively monitored to maintain law and order.
