Article written by: Dr. ARVIND NERAL RAIPUR: An educational Institution which was established on September 09, 1963 with one Dean, two teachers, three rooms and sixty chairs at one corner of Ayurvedic College Campus, has grown as a well organised reputed Medical Educational Institute in last 60 years . On it's inaugural function, first dean of this Pt. J. N. M. Medical College, Raipur, Late Dr. N. P. Banavari rightly said -“One day this region will be proud of this Medical Institute.” Today, this is a premier medical centre for approximately three crore people of Chhattisgarh, especially for low socio-economic class and is a prestigious Medical Educational Institute of high repute for meritorious students of this region. Initially, the foundation stone of its own building was to be laid down on 16" April 1965 in Pt. Ravishankar University Campus, but later on the site was transferred to the present Jail Road site and foundation stone was laid by the then Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Pandit Dwarika Prasad Mishra on the same day. By the order of M.P. Govt., 92 acre land area was transferred from Deptt. of Jail to Medical education for construction of college building, hospital, hostels and staff quarters. Chief Minister of M.P. Pandit Shyamacharan Shukla inaugurated the newly constructed college building on September 30, 1976 and MBBS admission capacity was increased from 60 to 100. As hospital building was not ready, medical college was attached to Dau Kalyan Singh Hospital for practical and clinical teaching of medical students. When Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Momorial Hospital came into existence in 1996, it substantially increased medical care and training facilities. In this very campus, an impressive Atal Bihari Bajpai Auditorium of 1200 spectators capacity has been constructed, which is one of the best auditorium of Chhattisgarh state. In its initial days, this medical college was affiliated to Dr. Harisingh Gaud University Sagar. In 1965, when Pandit Ravi Shankar Shukla University came into existence, its affiliation was transferred to it. Presently it is under Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhay Ayush & Health Sciences University , Raipur since 2008. MBBS intake capacity increased gradually -earlier it was 60 at the beginning of this institution, later on increased to 100 in year 1976 and presently it is 150+30 since 2009.From next academic year 2023-24 MBBS intake will be 200+ E.W.S. quota . Post-graduate Medical courses - MD/MS in various clinical, para clinical and non clinical subjects have been started from 1970. Presently, total number of P.G. seats are 145 , which itself is concrete evidence of its high academic status. This college is also running unique, job oriented courses like M.Sc Medical Biotechnology. BASLP and B.Sc./ M.Sc. in renal science . Various para-medical courses and regularly organised different refresher training courses for medical officers are other significant curricular activities of this institution. Experienced and senior teaching Faculty of this college also contribute substantially in teaching of all basic medical subjects to Dental. Physiotherapy and Nursing college students .Recently three superspeciality courses DM/M.Ch have been started and efforts are in pipeline to open broad- speciality and superspeciality courses in few more subjects. Institution is also trying hard to have separate departments of Geriatric medicine Transfusion medicine and Hematology with P.G. courses . Stepping on the developmental ladder, medical college hospital Dr. BR Ambedkar Memorial Hospital is making continuous progress and today it is the largest and most modern well-equipped hospital of Chhattisgarh State. With 24 departments, it is providing 1246 indoor patient beds and on an average 1400 patients attend OPD per day. These figures themselves are the best indicators showing significant medical care being provided to the poor population of this region. . Besides academic excellence, students of this college have shown their exemplary talents in cultural, literary and sports arena as well. Annual cultural programme of this college has always been subject of attention in the city. Till date, nearly 6000 doctors graduated from this institution and are giving their significant contribution in medical care services, teaching and research in various part of the state, nation and globe as a whole. Most important contribution is in form of peripheral medical facilities being provided in rural, remote and tribal areas of the state. Nearly 50 to 70% doctor in these areas are product of this institution, who are continuously giving their medical care to make people of Chhattisgarh healthy and hearty.
